Hi,
Thanks to a Loretta Hundley, I now have information
regarding the band in which I used to play while I was attending the University of Dubuque 1946-50. She noted in my website
at http://mason.k12.il.us/havanahs/kb9bye/ that I had played in Clarence Zahina's 'Barn
Stormers,' and relayed the information to Jannan.

drums; Walt Paar, guitar; and Del Doty, bass.
For years, and years, I've often thought of writing
to Radio Station KDTH, to find out if any of the recordings, or tapes of the Sunday
radio programs were available for sale, but never got around to it. I still
have the 'Barn Stormers' sound in my head, but actually never had a tape, or record.
After I graduated from the U of D in 1950, I was
recalled into the Navy, and served on the destroyer, Wm C. Lawe (DD-763), that made a
'good will' tour of the Mediterranean during the Korean War.
He no longer is the Tech. Director, and
is back in the classroom teaching English, but is still managing the school's, as well
as my website. Mine needs some updating, and changing since I moved back to Woodstock, IL after 15½ years in the land of the
sun!

Hi,
I am not a musician, but have always been interested in music, and appreciated ALL sorts of music.
I am essenatially interested HISTORY, which is neat, because there is no field, or no area, that
does not have a history
I found you site while trying to find a source for some of Clarence Zahina's music.... discs
or cassette tapes. Have found none to date. If you know of a source, please advise.
I knew Clarence in the motel owning days. I ran a paint store at the time, and he was one
of my valued customers. Always on the go, Always wanting to get "the show on the road"
I also knew a trombonist named Herbert Campbell. He had a long history of playing wiht different
big bands and jazz bands. He lived here, and died here. Had a bit of a drinking problem, but a very nioce guy to know.
Married to Fran Campbell who outlived him for many years, and had played piano with probably more bands than Herb had played
with.
The "Dells" area attracted a number of ex-professional musicians from the 40's and 50's. During
the War (WWII) there was a dance hall down by the river off of county "A" called "The Purple Grackle" . Huge crowds
for big name names. And I've forgotten the name of the dance hall that was downtown in the Olson Boat line property,
but it will come to me. They drew some of the biggest names in the business. My mother used to come all the way up here from
Southeast Iowa (Fairfield) where we lived to dance to the big name bands.
Also, was friends with Harold Burke, plectrum banjo player that used to travel all around
playing Dixieland.
I wish you well in your search fpr "history" I heard a lot of history in my chats
with Herb about Bunny Beriigan and Bix Biederbeck, and Jack Teagarten, as well as others. He had reallt been around!!
Sorry to ramble on.
The purpose of this note was to see if you could lead me to Zahina's music.

Russell William Schroeder, son of Russell C. Schroeder and Marie (Tomkins) Schroeder, was born
May 7, 1931 in Guttenberg, Iowa. He died Monday, September 19, 2005, at the Guttenberg Municipal Hospital following a short
illness. He attended the Guttenberg Public School and graduated from High School in 1949. After graduation, Russell played
trumpet for the Clarence Zahina KDTH Radio Dance Band until the Korean War. Russell joined the U.S. Air Force in January of
1951. After Air Force graduation, Russell was sent to Bolling Air Force Base, Washington D.C. to work in the Communications
Division of the Human Resources Research Laboratory. On June 3, 1952 Russell came home on military leave and married Elaine
Zittergruen, who accompanied him back to Washington D.C. where they made their home until 1953. He and Elaine came back to
Guttenberg and Rus went to work for his father in the family hardware business. He also went back playing trumpet part time
with local dance bands such as The Jolly Ridge Band and The Ray Alto Band. In 1957, Russell bought the family business, expanded
it, and changed the name to Schroeder Hardware & Variety, which he and his family operated until 1990, when Russell retired.
Russell was an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church where he was a President and Elder. He also was President of AAL Branch
2372. He was finance Officer & Commander of American Legion Post 373 in Guttenberg for many years, also Clayton County
Legion Commander. He was a charter member of the Dubuque Bank & Trust Emerald Crown Club He was also the Older Iowa’s
Legislator for Clayton County, President of the North East Iowa Advisory Council and President of the Area Agency on Aging
for Clayton County. Russell was a member of many local and statewide organizations in both the Civic and Business Community
and an officer to the Iowa Retail Hardware Association and the Dubuque Musicians Union Local. Survivors include his wife Elaine;
one daughter Sandra Sue (Schroeder) Seig & husband Gordon & grandson’s Greg, Alex, and Erik of Bettendorf, IA;
Rodney Dale Schroeder & Children, Jennifer, Jerry, & Paul, of Las Vegas, Nevada. Donald Dean Schroeder, Wife Chris,
& children, Haley and Elly of Guttenberg, IA. Rus has one sister Lorna M. Peterson and Husband Lyle of Houston, MN. Rus
has many relatives and friends both near and far from his travels. He was preceded in death by his parents, Russell Sr. and
Marie Schroeder, Granddaughter Sadey, Aunts, Uncles, and Cousins.
